There is a reason why I call home a Playground. Los Angeles may not be the most outdoorsy city in the West coast but we can get to wonderful places in less than two hours.
This March we discovered Cross Country Skiing In Big Bear. Rim Nordic Ski Area, 5 miles east of Running Springs, on the way to Big Bear Lake, in the San Bernardino Mountains across from Snow Valley Mt. Resort. Base elevation is 6775', with expert trails climbing to over 7000'. 12km of groomed trails for classic as well as skating. 2 square miles & more of accessible snowshoeing terrain.
For 3 hours we glided through the pines and experienced the peace and serenity of winter in the mountains. The pines were heavy with fresh snow but the weather was warm with perfect sunny blue skies. We enjoyed the uncrowned beauty of groomed cross-country ski trails and had a fantastic workout. The trails are not all flat and easy so we had to get good quickly at skiing uphill.
We loved the experience so much that we are no planning on buying our own skis and boots. Rentals are available but the skis were a bit old but good enough at $15 Dollars per adult, including the poles.

Coming up to Big Bear?
Here's something you should know
Hwy. 330 is temporarily undergoing restoration. Be sure to use Hwy. 38 (through Redlands), Hwy. 18 (through Crestline) or Hwy. 18 (through Lucerne Valley) for all Big Bear spring activities this March.
Route to Big Bear Lake:
Hwy. 38 (through Redlands) is a relaxing route that meanders through the national forest. This route offers the least amount of curves and has beautiful backcountry scenery.
Hwy. 18 (through Lucerne Valley) is a convenient route for those traveling from desert communities and North LA County. This route offers vast sights of the Mojave Desert.
Hwy.18 (through Crestline) also known as the Rim of the World Highway offers views of the inland valleys. This route is especially beautiful at night when all the city lights are shining below.
